Square Pegs, Round Holes
By: Cathy Fothergill, copyright 2002
Is your network marketing team trying to fit square pegs into round holes? Let me explain.
A few years ago, my husband and I became involved with a company whose product was web space (hosting) coupled with a good piece of web design software.
In the model of many "big gun" marketers, we began to market the opportunity instead of the product. The approach was, "Hey, the product doesn't really matter. How often will you have an opportunity to make $x on 6 sales."
I'll bet you can figure out what happened. In the first 48 hours, we made $5,500. That sounds great, doesn't it? We thought so, too! The problem is, it was all down hill from there.
We made the same mistake that many network marketing distributors make. We tried to make the business fit everyone. The result was that we had several team members who didn't understand the product and its benefits. They didn't make any money. Where are they today? They are either with other companies, or out of the industry completely. The only monetary thing we gained from the experience was a commission, ONE TIME.
Out of a desire to make a lot of money very quickly, we tried to make square pegs fit into round holes. We made a huge mistake.
Many of us have done that at least once. What I came to understand was that the network marketing business is never a quick solution to financial challenges.
Experience taught me that the best and most stable teams are built by fitting round pegs into round holes. It doesn't matter how good your product is, there will be people who will never be able to, or even want to market it. The reasons vary, but the fact remains.
I hope you haven't already learned this the hard way. Please, take it from those of us who've been there and done that. Go get your round pegs. When you're living your dreams, you'll be glad you did.
